Prepare

With the summer storm season here, now is the time to prepare for the worst: a hurricane, tornado, flood, hailstorm, lightning strike or fire.

Advance planning is essential both for protecting your property and for collecting from your insurer in the event of a loss. Here are eight tips to help you prepare for the next storm:

  1. Check your emergency supplies: flashlights, water bottles, portable generator, etc. Look at the dates on your battery packages and replace any that have expired.
  2. Make copies of key documents, including your property and casualty (P&C). Store those documents in two waterproof bags – one at your home and another at a different location.
  3. Inventory your personal possessions. Make a list of valuable items, and take photographs or videos as well. Find those old receipts or recent appraisals for jewelry, antiques or artwork and store those with your insurance policies. This is a fast and easy form of backup documentation that can be very helpful when filing a claim.
  4. Back up your data on home computers or tablets using another hard drive, thumbdrive or other portable device. Alternatively, you can use a cloud service provider so you can retrieve your online information from any location.
  5. Have a contingency plan in place if your residence is heavily damaged or destroyed. Know where you and your family would stay and where you might work if you currently run a business from your home.
  6. If your property has been damaged and repaired in the past, find those construction-related documents and put them with your policies. After all, you don’t want your insurer to deny a claim by saying your home or condominium building had pre-existing damage.
  7. Identify several contractors you could contact if your home is damaged in a storm. It’s much better to have a contractor you can trust when you need to repair your property.
  8. Finally, include a public adjuster in your post-storm emergency contact list. Unlike your insurance agent or “independent” adjuster, a public adjuster is a licensed professional who represents your interests and can help you file your claim so you don’t make an expensive mistake, and make sure you get a fair and equitable settlement.
